Well, IIRC, this couplet refers to the car accident that Robert
Hunter and Jerry Garcia were in years before where Jerry literally
came out of his tennis shoes as he was propelled through the
windshield...

please correct me if this is a wrong memory of mine or I just have
it wrong...am open to any clarifications
  

    
I don't think Hunter was in the car. Alan Trist was.  Hunter told me about
wearing his shoes out on his trek back to California from New Mexico, which
is part of the story in that song. I think the "lost my boots" line refers to
both incidents, in that wonderful Hunter way.

That couplet is very fine work, I reckon. Sets the scene
