ok, maybe, but it is like that: the present just gets more attention
than the future, and the past never ever wants to leave us no more. I
dont know if/when there was ever a time before like that. who has the
historical knowledge we would need here?

 the future was all in  the focus since recently, and now the present
wants more presence.
concerning "the impossibility of anything's being over",  I mean even
the past changes when it gets uploaded  into the now. 
there is always much discussion about opposites - black and white and
so on. past and present or future and present would fit into that, too.
but maybe future & past & present are beyond that in the ensemble,
sort of triadic. Stefan Weber came up with that word in the book
"private://public". these three times plus realtime are four then. More
like  a circle/time spiral stopping in realtime than a linear way.
seeing into the future  is nothing new, seeing into the present is more
of a new behaviour for me.

And to "The end of history means the launch of reality's syndication
as endless reruns."-
We talk about that in the book, too - with Bazon Brock. He thinks we
all go into an endless recycling loop of art and information. I dont
think so. Even if lots of stuff look too much the same, there are still
many ways to do something unique. Its maybe too soon to make a more
objective statement, in a few years we should talk about that again.

Yes, I personally am not a big fan of negativity and principal
critizism, cause it stops actions too fast. This happens with netart
now, and happened with electronic music before. Someone decides "this
is netart" and so everything else should fall out. But what if that
person is wrong. How often in history did an art critic say, that
something was not avantgarde, but it was. Its a difficult point. For me
as an artist I try not to stick too much to all opinions I hear, if
they would make me stop working. I want to listen to my sort of inner
voice and my feelings I have, when I produce something. I normally
know, if something looks different, than I wanted it. (Soundz like a
typical female statement, I know) Anyway, it it is fun, David, that for
you that attitude comes out as one  of fun, enjoyness,... So I could
hide my self-doubt very well, right?  ;-)   A good question is what to
turn  into art. I believe every artist has very strict rules on that,
me included. So on one side I try to put daily topics into my art, on
the other side I want it to be beyond daily experiences. Again
difficult decisions included.


And now back to Jon:
I'm interested, Elisa, in whether there's an ideological aspect to
your work, or do you think of yourselves as apolitical?
I dont see myself as apolitical. i think not working in an advertizing
agency these days and not producing cooperate design for commerce is
already political. But the problem here is, that as artists as we are
(audio-visual) we are not fit enough in words. So there are persons who
are a lot better in that. And basically you have to be like that to
act politically. As the art in our case wants a word-less composition,
talking is on the other end. Its hard to "workout" in both.
I would like to be better in making precise definitions, but I am
really more a visual person. When I try to describe something, I try to
translate images.  I think there is some discussion going on on that
in nettime right now. Even if nettime is about art, too, I would say
95% of the postings are not by artists, but by theorists.  So others
seem to have a similiar situation. Its really a problem, because its
important to hear artiststalk about art, and let not only curators and
journalists describe a movement. But do you see a solution on that? 
does anyone think, too - that art and theory should meet? I mean
culture is quite political, because  it forms. this is what will stay.
when you look at a certain decade, century you see and hear it, dont
you?

And Howard, hi!! ;-) my favorite tools change again and again. right
now I love firewire, the powerbook on accu and my DV-set up. In and out
 direction --> MIDI-keyboard, synched with Gary. Thats my No1. set up

Hi Howard !

Making music, I play (i woulden´t use the word "work" here, as Tim
Leary almost threw me out of his house when asking, after seeing his
bureau, do you work HERE?) with Steinberg sequencing software, namely
Cubase VST/24 5.0. And, which becomes more and more important, with
plug ins. Either as software synths or effects by companies Native
Instruments (Berlin) and Cycling74 (San Francisco). Recently, I tend to
do all the soundshaping and sampling on the computer, leaving the
racks of samplers, effects and synths in their flightcases more and
more disconnected ! I think, in the future more or less all of the
music-making will be done on the HD exclusively.
And, it´s so very convenient to play live with a powerbook (in my case
an iBook), where you carry all your studio with you, strapped over
your shoulder. 
Only 1 year ago, when performing live, I had to rent a minibus to
carry all the samplers, mixer, synths etc. to the venue to play for one
hour. Now you plug the iBook into the PA, and off we go !
And in the hotelroom, you work on improvements of the songs over
headphones the night before the gig.
