I kind of think that Mark/grandma/mymark could find a way to become an
outcast in any social setting.  But at the same time, there is a place
and a validity, even to that.  

What a hard row to hoe -- to take on the job of reminding those who
take "belonging to the group" for granted that there are always those
who are left out.

I've been reading recently about the history of "twelve-tribe nations"
as one of the archytypical forms of social organization that appears
over and over in different parts of the world.  One interesting point
is that very often the pattern evolves in a way so that a 12-tribe
grouping consists of 11 actual extant tribes and one "lost tribe" -- a
social placeholder, recognition that even the most inclusive collective
endeavour is still missing something or someone.  You see this also in
astrology -- the concept of the "12th house" has to do with all that
has been exiled, lost to living memory.

Regarding <330> and <332>, and the plausability of there being "a
crazy person involved in the founding of..." -- well, it seems to me
there was *always* a crazy person involved in the founding of anything
and everything in the '60s.  There was always at least someone (usually
both gifted and troubled) for whom it didn't all play out along lines
they could follow...  Such people were sometimes just pathetic or
disagreeable, and other times, passionately in touch with something the
rest of us couldn't quite see.  To me, it seems important to remember
them, because they remind us how messy and unclear and different
beginnings are from continuations and from endings.

involved in that -- my skepticism was specifically about *this* person
(MES) being involved.  I wonder if <tnf> has had a chance to check

No, I have not.  I have been on vacation and then scrambling to meet
deadlines before going on the road, where I am now.

rab, you're right.  I ask you not to attack Mark, and you have shown
remarkable restraint.  So I think it's only fair to hide Mark's e-mail in
which he takes a shot or two at you, and which I reposted because I
inadvertently snipped the first line of it when I originally posted it and
was removing the header info.

You might want to take a peek and see if adding the first line makes a

  {shrug}  The first line just confirms my interpretation, but I'm not
going to waste time by engaging in further rounds of "Did too!" "Did not!"
here.  Perhaps someone who cares will come up with some way to document
their interpretation and memory of the history; I'm satisfied that my own

Matthew Lyon, 45, Historian of the Internet

Matthew McTee Lyon, co-author of a history of the Internet, died on Saturday
on a visit to Seattle. He was 45 and lived in Berkeley, Calif.

Mr. Lyon, an assistant vice chancellor of the University of California, died
apparently of a heart attack, the university said.

He and his wife, Katie Hafner, wrote "Where Wizards Stay Up Late: The
Origins of the Internet" (Simon & Schuster). First published in 1996, it
remains in print.

Mr. Lyon was born in Willimantic, Conn. He graduated from Hampshire College
in Amherst, Mass.

He held a number of positions in journalism and was a speechwriter and
director of national issues for Representative Richard A. Gephardt, Democrat
of Missouri, before joining the University of Texas as an assistant to the
president. He was named assistant vice chancellor for public affairs at
Berkeley in January 1999, responsible for media and government relations.

Besides his wife, a reporter for the Circuits section of The New York Times,
survivors include their daughter, Zoe; his parents, Richard and Denny McTee
Lyon of Austin; and two brothers, Jeremy, of Coos Bay, Ore., and Alexander,
of Austin.
