 Some knowledge of Perl would be very helpful before reading the book.

 I think, though, that anyone who knows a programming language would 
do fine.  A reader that doesn't mind referring to some other text on Perl

Schlemiels beat Stephen King
----------------------------------------------------
Stephen King may be quitting, but The Brothers Schlemiel  goes on!

After only five installments, Stephen King announced the death of his online
serialization "The Plant." While trumpeted by the New York Times as a
failure of electronic publishing, the quiet success of a lesser-known
serialization continues to grow.

WELL author Mark Binder's "The Brothers Schlemiel," a novel serialized via
email to subscribers was begun in February of 2000, months before Stephen
King began his venture, and its author plans to continue writing and
releasing new installments until the novel is completed in February of 2002!

"Stephen King tried to release a book in installments," said author Mark
Binder. "He'd just stop after 10,000 or so words. It wasn't a serial. It
didn't grab you at the end of each installment."

That combined with the fact that readers had to return to the web site, and
pay more for each month's episode made for diminishing numbers of readers
with every installment. The Brothers Schlemiel tells the story of identical
twins growing up, getting into trouble, falling in love, and... (to be

"The Brothers Schlemiel is a subscribe-and-enjoy experience," said Binder.
"You pay once, and you'll get the whole book. Even so, it's difficult to
sell email. That's why we decided to release Part One on CD with audio."

Beginning in early November, Light Publications announced the release of
"The Brothers Schlemiel -- From Birth to Bar Mitzvah" a combination audio
and data CD, which includes the author reading excerpts from the book, along
with the complete text of part one and a subscription to the email version
of the story.

"We've even included a Chanukah bonus story," Binder said. "This is a
wonderful gift for seniors with computers. Every week I get notes from
readers saying how much they look forward to their email."

The book is Rhode Island A to Z, a coloring/learning book all about Rhode

The book is written by me, and illustrated by Donna Atwood, the former
<bratwood> on the WELL.  We're publishing it together.

A lot of the book was created on the WELL, and via email between Donna and
I.

The last part of the journey (the selling part) I've been chronicling over

I've got over 35 stores in the Rhode Island area that will be selling the

Thanks all!  It's been a lot of fun and quite interesting.

My favorite part about having written the book is that I can actually
point to it and say-- I did it!

Normally, my work as an actor and clown is something that happens, and all
you are left is with the memory of it, (and if you are lucky, some
fabulous flea memorabilia.)

This is something tangible.

I also really like it when I go in to the bookstore or library or
giftstore and introduce myself as the author of this book.  Some people's
faces light up immediately.  Occasionally I get a "no light up" until they
see the book. And very occasionally they wouldn't light up if you set them
on fire.

It's good to have a book that makes people do that!
  

    

I know that feeling.  I don't uIt is a great feeling, to see your book in a
store or library, or better yet in someone's hands!

Occasionally someone will bring one of my books to a gig of mine and ask for
an autograph.  That's a double thrill!
