My fave bookstore is Three Lives Books on Tenth Street in Manhattan. I go in there and it's better than taking heroin, such a fine calm happiness comes over me. It's a small store, but GAWD do those chicks know what they're doing! Plus, there is usually Theo the dog there.
My favorite is Amaz...oh, wait. My favorite is Dutton's Brentwood Books, but I'm biased because I used to work there for a year. They're probably the best indie bookstore in the Greater Los Angeles area.
I did a reading there once. What a great store!

I hate it. I find it annoying!
That is a shame, but I still feel validated in my love of it.

It's just a little too twee for me, with all the adorable cards and children's items.
But the presence of Scott Wannberg makes it all worthwhile!
Every time I visit LA, it's good to go to Dutton's on a Saturday and hear Scott say, "Ronnnn HO-gan" as I walk in the door. And he knows everybody. And you can spend your whole time there with him and not see a single twee card or children's book.
I contend Scott should be listed in the tourist guides for folks visiting LA. He should be given landmark status.

Bay Book & Tobacoo in Half Moon Bay was always great. I haven't been there in several years so I can't vouch for it currently, but it was fabulous when I was a kid.

I love A Clean Well-Lighted Place for Books when Linda Dyer is doing the event. I love Book Passage (in Corte Madera) because they do so much for authors and are fighting the good fight for the indies and mostly because they carry all my CDs and not only that are the only consignment account I've ever had that pays for product without being hounded. I love Staceys in downtown SF because they have an incredible nonfiction section and because they tell me secret places to park. I love Booksmith on Haight Street because they used to be my neighborhood bookstore and I love the owners (who have been roadies for the Remainders) and they make baseball trading cards for the authors who read there. And I love Cover to Cover for the Childrens section. Impossible to pick a favorite, but don't get me started on the bookstores I DON'T like, and why! Oh - I also like cody's a lot.

Well, I don't have any bookstores I need to knock at the moment. I do want to offer praise for Copperfield's, a small bookstore chain in Sonoma County, California. The company has five or six shops spread across the county, it's still a small business. I like that the individual shops have "Local Author" sections where they carry the books written by people living in the community. They even carry self-published works, such as a quarterly magazine self-published for the past five years by a trio of girls now just in their mid-teens.

Favorite LA bookstores: almost all the indies. Dutton's in Brentwood, Bodhi Tree (on Melrose), Book Soup (on Sunset), Sisterhood (in Westwood), and the Studio City location of Samuel French.

what is the name of that book store on clement... around 5th I think. I used to love to go there and stamer around. I'm still looking in chicago. There are quite a few indie's here.
Bookplate? Is it still there?
Green Apple. It is, last time I checked, still there.

Heintzelman's Bookstore in Los Altos is wonderful. Conrad Heintzelman used to work in publishing in Manhatttan and gives great gossip. Susan, his wife, was a librarian at Columbia and makes offbeat, thoughtful book recs.
