The KPFA Grateful Dead Marathon will take place Saturday, February 3, 2001
from 9:00 am until 1:00 am. It will be webcast globally via DeadNet, with
help from jamradio.com and Sonic Focus.

The music for this year's marathon is shaping up nicely. Given the amount of
stuff that's in circulation these days, it's hard to come up with things that
no one has heard, but I think I have a few items that will impress the
hardcore completists.

Mostly, though, I'm just concentrating on making it a day full of great
music, "collectible" or otherwise.

You'll hear the complete concert of 5/26/77, which has never been in
circulation in soundboard form; the complete 8/27/72, from a source other
than the circulating "Betty board" tape; some rehearsal material from 1990,
including a nice performance of "Good Night Irene"; and lots of great music
-- complete sets and shorter pieces -- from all over the Dead's career.

I have an hour or so of music recorded March 17, 1975 at Bob Weir's studio,
during the making of "Blues for Allah," with Ned Lagin, grand and electric
piano; Jerry Garcia, electric guitar; David Crosby, electric 12-string
guitar; Phil Lesh, bass; and Bill Kreutzmann, drums. It was Ned's 27th
birthday. Some pretty incendiary playing. This will be featured in the
early evening on Marathon day. Ned will be in the studio to introduce the
music and talk about his time with the Dead and other stuff, probably around
7:00 Pacific time.

More Crosby action: in the afternoon, Steve Silberman will bring in the
delightful "Kids and Dogs," a Jerry Garcia-David Crosby duet with multiple
vocal overdubs by Croz; and we'll also feature several other Crosby-Dead
collaborations.

You can listen and pledge online at <http://www.kpfa.org>. KPFA broadcasts
at 94.1 in northern California, and also through KFCF 88.1 in Fresno. Both
<http://www.kpfa.org> and <http://www.kfcf.org> will have high-quality MP3
feeds. The main feed will be through SonicFocus:
<http://www.sonicfocus.com/kpfa/>. There will be a live chat room at that
site. You can email me at david@gdhour.com -- I'll be online throughout the
day and night.

To pledge the old-fashioned way (and get a premium, such as the "Best of the
Grateful Dead Hour" CD), call 510-848-5732 or 1-800-439-5732.

I'm looking forward to hearing her interview on WEST COAST LIVE
(http://http://www.wcl.org/) I went to last Saturday's show, which was
broadcast live from the Raven Theater in Healdsburg. Sedge Thomson is a
lively, playful and articulate interviewer. This should be a great venue,

I was on West Coast Live about 6 years ago. It's a lot of fun!

Have a ball! I thought it was especially fun meeting the other cool
guests.... (For me, it was String Cheese incident!)

They're also pretty good about archiving the shows....

<http://www.wcl.org/realaudio/WCL19960831.ram> I'm on from about the 40
minute mark on (as the Mystery Guest!)

Nothing on your same scale, but I've got two book signings on the same day
this weekend.

Not quite a tour, sort of like an event...

Starting January 30, author David Shenk will be joining us in Inkwell.vue to
delve into the difficult and distressing subject of Alzheimer's, and to
discuss his best-selling book, "The Forgetting -- Alzheimer's: Portrait of
an Epidemic." If you want a preview of what we'll be talking about with
David, check this out:

On Wednesday evening, January 21, PBS will air "The Forgetting" -- a
documentary on Alzheimer's inspired by author David's book of the same name.

Of the documentary, David says, "It's a very powerful film that puts most of
its focus on the experience of families dealing with Alzheimer's. There's
also a taste of the history and a little bit of science woven in."

It'll show at 10 p.m. Pacific Time on KQED, San Francisco, and will air
again the following Sunday, January 25, at noon.

The show airs on the east coast at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.

For those of you in other time zones, check your local PBS schedules:

The Rapture Interruptus Revival
April 26 - May 1 In Northern California

The fundamentalist plan – "The Rapture" – is now in progress. People are
vanishing, yanked up into another world. These believers are disappearing
into SUV's, idling between super malls. They believe, though, with the
Playstations in their dashboards, that their Ford Expeditions are climbing
straight up cliffs and jumping fjords and running with wolves. That's
Heaven's final ad campaign: Consumers on pixilated interstates up Mount
Everest. Those of us left behind will die in the Hell and rising Floods of
the over-heating planet.

Children, welcome to the The Rapture Interruptus Revival - we shall hit the
Rapture right where it hurts. We shall slam the Rapture into Reverse. We
shall sing "Stop Shopping" between the consumer and the car – catching them
in the Parking Lot Of No Return. We plan a new kind of performance art, a
curving choreography designed for on-ramps. Exorcisms of Bad Traffic are now
being taught in 24 hour all-night shifts at the Slow Consuming School of
Divinity…
