Also, Karawynn Long had a story that was withdrawn from the book
for the same reason. She's posted it online at

Actually, not. Karawynn Long and Neil Gaiman couldn't agree on a rewrite.
She probably hated the contract too, she's no fool, but I don't think it got
to that point.

Lenny's version is what Karawynn said at the time, FWIW. She understood
the story to have been accepted.

mentioned. FWIW.

She understood her story to be accepted without the changes?

I'm long out of this loop, so I could be wrong.

There was a disagreement about that. Karawynn believed the story to have
been accepted, and doubtless still does today. Beyond that I ought not
speak for her.

Subject: for Neil Gaiman conference :)

hello, a friend said i might be able to give you something to post on
this conference...

i think the site is great, but sadly am a little short on funds, so if
you could it would be very much appreciated :) oh and please feel free
to laugh :)

erm...this is it... :)

"Hullo Neil, so I finally get around to alerting you to the ickle
coincidinkies which have been plaguing me for a while... :)
Oh, and how are you...coping with weather?...You must feel at home :)
Well anyhows...you see...we share birthdays...but then i guess alot of
people do:) I think i was born at about 5.45pm, or was that my
daughter???Hmm, time isn't really the first thing on your mind when
giving birth i suppose :)

Also i was born on the night of HUGE storms in England...(1977)...my dad
bought my mum a bunch of flowers and they were only stalks when he
arrived at the hospital due to the gales :)...but i digress :)
I recently had the pleasure of reading Stardust, only to find that 2
characters shared 2 of my names...My middle name, Victoria(Vicky) as in
Victoria Forrester - I was also named after Queen Victoria, and
Cecilia...my confirmation name :)

Then tonight I read Chivalry (sweet, reminded me of my Grandma) and
Marie ran off with Galahad...Marie is my first name (it was a catholic
christening).

This kinda leads me to my question...which you (obviously) don't have to
answer...were you brought up catholic?I only ask because there seem to
be fairly frequent references to at least christianity...also as well as
such scary ppl as lewis carroll, might this explain some the may i say
darker side to your writing which i find endlessly addictive, and
usually shocking. I get the impression you enjoy the cruelty of a
non-happy ending...maybe cruelty is too strong a word :)

Oh and btw, thanks ever so much...in the last 6 months you taght me 2
very important things...the death quote...something along the lines of
"noone is creep from the inside", that certainly allowed me to look on
people in a whole new light...and something you said about anyone having
ideas, it taking the time to put them on paper...it gave me the right
kick up the backside to finally start writing seriously and follow the
daydream i had buried under realism and willingness to please :) My
proudest moment came when my mother said i had returned to airy-fairy
land :)

Oh and please could you send my love to Tori and family...even if she is
making me broody as hell :)

Nice to finally communicate

Vicky"

OK, that's it :) Hope it isn't too long...thanks alot guys :)

Vicky

Am in Stockholm. Very sleepy, not having slept yet in the whole
travelling bit. Read YEAR'S BEST FANTASY & HORROR 13 on the plane. JUst
ate lunch and listened to the swedish army brass band playing Abba's
SUPER TROOPER in the town square. Kept expecting a giant glitter ball
to come down from the sky.

It was a long time ago but my recollection is that Karawynn's story
basically got shafted by Harper Collins -- she wasn't happy with the
contract either, but the four people who I apologised to in the
dedication had actually had stories fully accepted and bought. I liked
Karawynn's story and wanted to take it -- thought it had been accepted,
pending rewrites -- but then Harper Collins decided the book was too
long already, and Karawynn's story was longer than we had room for, and
there were various miscommunications between Ed Kramer and Karawynn
which meant that I'm still not sure what happened next -- whether she
pulled it or there simply wasn't room. It wasn't that K & I couldn't
agree on a rewrite -- I think HC simply decided the book was full
before we got to that point; and the contract issue didn't help.

I know that Karawynn was pleased to have the story up on her web page
-- she's told me that she's got terrific feedback on it over the
years, and I'm pleased she didn't have to cut it there.

Vicky -- what a wonderful set of coincidences.

Nope, I wasn't brought up Catholic, although I'm sure some crept in
around the edges from my fondness for GK Chesterton. All my guilt is
jewish.

I think my favorite endings are inevitable. It's not the happy or the
sad, it's how you get there that matters...

In Gothenburg at the book fair. Having a lot of fun with Terry
Pratchett -- just like old times, except we're older, richer and
fatter. But we still make each other laugh a lot.

Having fun with coming up with NEW things to write in people's copies
of Good Omens (soon to be a major motion picture).

Talking of Ed Kramer, I see from today's e-mail that he's made the
Atlanta newspapers with accusations of Child Molestation, and is
currently in jail without being allowed bail. Ick. The curse of
Karawynn Long is slow in coming but deadly when it finally arrives.

Just a quick post to report that after much ado with UPS breaking
major rules and having it disappear into the city for a few days, the
jacket is now safe in my apartment.

Too bad I'm still stuck at the Grand Canyon.

I am going to try to convince the CBLDF to let me charge a small
donation for a polaroid of whoever wants one wearing the thing. A
whole lot of people have asked to try it on.

Anyway. Back to babysitting. *grumble*

There's no reason you can't take a donation and add 'em up and write a check
to the CBLDF! Good idea.

Sunny -- absolutely! Charge 'em ten bucks for the CBLDF to try it on
and have a polaroid in it. Charge 'em $15 for photos of you in the
jacket.

How is it to wear? It had only just come back from being redyed the
day I sent it off to the CBLDF, so it was very black but a little
stinky from dye. I trust it has enough pockets for you...

Martha, like you I wish it weren't true about Ed and hope it's not.

Woah...

I posted a little description to AFNG:

"It fits. Makes me look like a big, black marshmallow (goth
marshmallow?), but it fits. It weighs about 6 lbs (umm…I think that’s
like 2.7 kg to our metric friends), smells kind of yicky, and makes
abominable squeaky noises when you try to move in it. It’s got neato
pockets on the inside (all empty), and worn elbows, and there’s a green
tag that says ‘930’ stuck with one of those little plastic doohickeys
to the inside of the left sleeve."

Pockets good. Although it means I will be forever doing the
cigarette-looky-dance.

I must say, I felt really guilty for having bought it until I tried it
on...*whisper* it's the coolest jacket I have ever seen (and I own
about 15 jackets).

You think $10? That was my original thought, but my boyfriend
suggested I go a bit lower so that more people could do it.

Hmmm...charging for photos of me? Not likely. Right now I am trying
to decide if I have lost enough weight to appease both my sense of
exhibitionism and about 4 million weirdo guy requests by posting photos
on my website.

In any case, photos of one sort or another are forthcoming.

Sunny,

oh good. It should stop squeaking with wear, that must be from the
redying job too, I think (it had faded with wear, so the body of the
jacket was blue and the additions were black).

You know, I honestly don't think there's anyone out there who could
afford $5 who couldn't afford $10, if you see what I mean... It's for a
good cause. Make it $10...
.........
Had a long day signing with Terry Pratchett at the Swedish Bookfair.
hard work but very good fun, I think. Terry and I have been making up
lots of new Good Omens two part messages, of which my favourites are

"Heaven Can Wait/Hell will be right over"

and a variation on an old favourite

"Armageddon in Coming!/Look Busy"

home tomorrow morning.

For the benefit of Linda and Co., Sunny let me borrow her account.

Speaking for myself, five dollars sounds much better than ten. Ten
dollars could buy an entire pack of polaroids, and even if it's for a
good cause, it's still 1/10th of all the money I have in the world
right now.

So now that the well community knows my current financial status, I'll
just cough and continue.

Anyways, just a couple of Sandman-ish questions, in case you were
missing them. In Death: The High Cost of Living, is the 'gloved woman'
meant to bring such strong echoes of Wanda, or is that a completely
separate story? Also, in the end, did you have a specific
disease/condition in mind with Didi? Okay, I think I managed to ask
both of those without any spoilers. Thank you, and hope the flight
home goes well. Are you *always* this brain swirlingly busy?
