well, the amazon page says "Usually ships within 24 hours." Maybe that's boilerplate. I'm assuming it's readily available, though.

Just got it yesterday from Amazon. List is $25, and including shipping from Amazon, I got it for jsut under $22.00 I read the first couple of pages, and this iwll be my night time reading. So far, I like the way you are introducing the 'feeling' of what it means to be a deadhead...

From: "Bill Kramer" <b.kramer@lycos.com> David and Diana, Got my copy of "GD Reader" Wednesday (at a Charlottesville, VA Barnes and Noble - so it's out there), and just wanted to say that it's a beaut. As befitting the subject matter and Oxoford's reputation, it's nicely presented. Strong binding, and tasteful layout. Great touch with the dancing bears across the bottom of the pages, and the lightning bolts seperating passages in the longer selections. As a longtime Deadhead, I've collected as much as possible written about Dead over the years (to the extent of haunting libraries, ordering back issues of magazines, and relying on the benevolence of the vaunted Dead network of friends), and have much of what's here. But this book is essential because it pulls together much of the great writing about the band together in one place. Enjoyed the stuff I hadn't read yet. McNally's piece (when is he EVER gonna finish HIS book??!!), and several others. Great to see Charlie Haas' thing included My only quibble (a minor one) would been to include Ken Babb's fine article about Garcia's recovery that appeared in the Golden Road. A very different look from a very different perspective. Must have been tough to pick the content. Anyway, my humble compliments on a job well done. This one belongs on every Deadhead's bookshelf. Bill Kramer

Picked up my copy yesterday at Staceys on Market in S.F.. Now, if I could just find the time with my parents in town to read a few chapters.... Looks great, though, and I really look forward to diving into this fabulous literary collection!

Gee, it's great to hear that people are actually getting the book and enjoying it! We weren't sure if Oxford was EVER going to ship it to stores... We just got off the phone with <shmo>, who does a fine radio interview, and decided we'd better check the Inkwell since he mentioned this venue on the air! Bill Kramer: thanks for the note. It's nice to hear that a collector, who has read a similar mountain of material, thinks it's an ok selection. It's true that we had to leave a bunch of very good stuff out (one of which was Kesey's own piece after Garcia died: The False Notes He Never Played). There's definitely room for more such collections--but maybe not for a year or two, ok? (Just kidding...) Dennis McNally really can write, can't he? We are all eagerly awaiting the "official" bio, and I have heard rumors that several hundred pages are done and being read by select individuals, who think it's great so far. His bio of Kerouac was wonderful, and was the reason he was hired by the band (or so I have it from a piece he wrote somewhere--don't make me prove it). We're starting to do a short series of bookstore signings (after the launch at the Booksmith), which will include the Capitola Book Cafe, Border's San Rafael, and Cody's in Berkeley (Telegraph store) over the next couple of weeks. See our events listing at http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/gdreader.html#events for details! David Gans, Blair Jackson, Charlie Haas, Susana Millman, and Mary Eisenhart, among others, have said they'll be at some or other of the events. And we're REALLY HOPING that William Craddock will show up at the Capitola event. (Though we haven't heard back from him.)

I've seen a bit of Dennis's book, and he has threatened to make me read the whole thing (along with several other peer types; actually, I'd be honored to be one of his peer reviewers). What I've seen is quite promising -- he has designed a very interesting book.

Brief update from Capitola: no sign of William Craddock at our reading, which was, nevertheless, nicely attended and a lot of fun to do. Great bookstore, the Capitola Book Cafe. And hey, our names were up on the store marquee: Johnny B. Goode Tonight!

Gee, they didn't shoot us for local cable...but that's just as well. As usual, we went in with no set list for this reading, and bumbled our way through. Had some great questions and comments from the audience, including one from a confused guy who wondered if we were talking about a book that was out of print, since we mentioned so frequently that this or that piece in the book was unavailable anywhere...we set him straight (as straight as we could). If anyone out there reading this who is NOT a contributor (or, I guess, even if you are) and would like to help get the word out, would you be willing to post a reader review on Amazon? There aren't any yet. Next week's events include an appearance at 7:30 p.m. at Border's Books in San Rafael with the two of us, plus Blair Jackson, and, I think, David Gans. David? Are you going to be there?

Very interesting, if mixed, interview. But ultimately favorable, although it was hard to tell which side of the fence the reviewer was on until the last sentence.
