First confirm that you are set up and have the correct password in mind, by logging in to iris.well.com. Next, continue here to re-configure your email applications.) Find your mail program in the ones listed below and set up your computer's mail client to get incoming WELL mail, and to send out your WELL email via your ISP's outgoing server, or via The WELL's. If your Mail application is not listed, you may be able to solve the mystery by comparing choices and looking at several instructions here. IMPORTANT - You must configure Thunderbird v. 3 manually, not automatically. See next section below for version 2 instructions.
These directions are taken from http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Configure+an+Account where there are helpful illustrations, and where info may change. Compare there if you have difficulties.
First, open the Account Settings (Tools | Account Settings). Each email account that has already been configured is listed on the left side of the Account Settings dialog. These accounts correspond to the top-level folders displayed in the "All Folders" list.
Click the Account Actions button and select Add Mail Account.
Enter your email account details and press Continue. Thunderbird will try to determine your account settings based on the domain portion of your email address (that is, the portion after the "@" symbol). Thunderbird will make the wrong guesses. Press the Stop button to abort the lookup, then edit the server names, port and select IMAP, and then select Manual configuration to manually set up the the account. Note that it's important that you set server names, port and make the IMAP choice before clicking Manual configuration. (Alternatively, you can allow the lookup to gather default account details and then manually change the settings later instead.) You will use iris.well.com as both the incoming and outgoing server in this process. We have been suggesting IMAP for most WELL users as it is more sophisticated. If you have decided to use POP, go here for the settings.
Configure the outgoing server as iris.well.com
Multiple email accounts can use the same outgoing or SMTP server. In the Account Settings dialog, in the left pane, select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the bottom of the list. There may be an entry in the resulting list that was created automatically by Thunderbird when you entered your account details. Either edit that entry or add a new entry.
- Server Name: iris.well.com
- Port: 587
- Use name and Password: checked
- User Name: your well login without "@well.com" extension (for example, if you email address is puffball@well.com, then your user name is "puffball").
- Connection Security: STARTTLS
After saving the information about the new outgoing server, go back and select your new email account from the list. In the Outgoing Server (SMTP) field, select the SMTP server you just entered (iris.well.com) from the drop-down list. Other items on the page were automatically created when you entered the account details - alter and extend as necessary.
Click on the Server Settings option under your new account. Make sure the entries correspond to the settings below:
- Select IMAP not POP;
- Enter iris.well.com as the name of the Incoming mail server.
- Be sure the Port is 993, and STARTTLS is selected under Security Settings. 'Use secure authentication' should *not* be checked.
NOTE: Some Internet Service Providers do not allow their customers to use an external SMTP server such as ours when you are connecting through their network. If this is the case with your ISP, try using port 587 for outgoing mail. If that doesn't work, you must put in their SMTP server, rather than iris.well.com, for outgoing use.
Older version of Thunderbird? Try this non-automatic approach:
- Open Thunderbird.
- From the Tools menu, select Account settings and choose Add account, Email account, and fill in the information to identify your account.
- Select IMAP and enter iris.well.com as the name of the Incoming mail server.
- Be sure the Port is 993, and select STARTTLS under Security Settings for the Incoming mail server. 'Use secure authentication' should *not* be checked.
- The Outgoing mail server is also iris.well.com and the outgoing port is either <25> or <587>.
- Under Security settings, click Use name and password and select STARTTLS.
- NOTE: Some Internet Service Providers do not allow their customers to use an external SMTP server such as ours when you are connecting through their network. If this is the case with your ISP, try using port 587 for outgoing mail. If that doesn't work, you must put in their SMTP server, rather than iris.well.com, for outgoing use.
- Click the OK button to close the window.
Outlook Express on a PC or a Mac, or Windows Mail on a PC, with IMAP
- Open Outlook Express or Windows Mail.
- From the Tools menu, select "Accounts"
- Select the Mail tab and click the Add button and select Mail.
- Enter your name, your email address at The WELL
- Select IMAP server, and enter iris.well.com as both Incoming and Outgoing mail server.
- Review your settings in the next screen and hit Next and Finish.
- Highlight the account you just set up, and click Properties.
- Select the Advanced tab and make the following changes:
- Outgoing Server Port 25
- Under Outgoing Mail server, click My server requires authentication., click Settings and enter your username and password. Use TLS security for outgoing.

- Open Outlook.
- Open the Tools menu and E-mail Accounts window.
- In the E-mail Accounts window, enter iris.well.com for both the IMAP server
and the SMTP server.
- Click "More Settings" and under the Outgoing Server tab, put a check in "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication".
- Click "Use same settings as my Incoming mail server". Click OK.
- Under the Advanced tab:
- Incoming server (IMAP) is 993 and it requires SSL.
- Outgoing server is either 25 or 587. Use TLS security for outgoing.
- NOTE: Some Internet Service Providers do not allow their customers to use an external SMTP server such as ours when you are connecting through their network. "Mail" on Mac OSX, with IMAP
- Go into Settings directly; or Launch the "Mail" application.
- From the Mail menu, select Preferences and click the +.
- Name your account, and choose IMAP as your Account Type
- Highlight your account's name in the left column.
- Open Advanced. Check Enable this account and change the port number to 993. Check Use SSL Authentication.
- Open Account Information. Under Outgoing Mail (SMTP), Server settings, change the port to 25. Check Use SSL, and enter your username and password.
- NOTE: Some Internet Service Providers do not allow their customers to use an external SMTP server such as ours when you are connecting through their network. If this is the case with your ISP, try using port 587 for outgoing mail. If that doesn't work, you must put in their SMTP server, rather than iris.well.com, for outgoing use.
Thunderbird on a PC or Mac with imap -- Important. If you are setting up Thunderbird v. 3, read the instructions here, but use POP and port 995 instead of IMAP and 993. Here are tips for older versions:
- Open Thunderbird.
- From the Tools menu, select Account settings and choose Add account, Email account, and answer the questions to identify your account.
- Select POP and enter iris.well.com as the name of the Incoming mail server.
- Be sure the Port is 995, and SSL/TLS is selected under Security Settings. Authentication method is Normal Password.
- For Outgoing (SMTP) mail server, enter iris.well.com and either port 25 or 587. Check "Use name and password, and enter your username, and select TLS for Secure connection.

- Enter iris.well.com as your Outgoing Mail Server and check Use Authentication. Enter your username and password.
- Click Create.
