Pointy spines are removed from cones and they are allowed to dry in the sun while the scales open. After filling they are hung by a metal shower curtain ring tightened around the wide end of the cone or by plastic cable ties. Tree branches with pine cones still attached are also used. Pine cones are discarded after one use.
