The reign of Constantius lasted thirty-nine years in all: for fifteen years he was Caesar, for twenty-four Augustus, eight of which alone and sixteen with his brothers and Magnentius. He was fortunate in the civil wars, but unfortunate in battle with foreigners. He had a rare talent for archery, was very moderate in his enjoyment of food, wine, and sleep, and he was tireless in work. He diligently strove to attain eloquence, but because his slow mind did not permit him to succeed in that, he was envious of the talents of others.
