The Well Choir Invisible

O may I join the choir invisible
Of those immortal dead who live again
                          George Eliot, 1867

This parrot is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. This is a late parrot. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the perch, it would be pushing up the daisies. It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-parrot. Monty Python, 1969

John Perry Barlow is a retired Wyoming cattle rancher, a wordmonger for the
Grateful Dead, and a cognitive dissident. In 1990, he co-founded the Electronic
Frontier Foundation with Mitchell Kapor.

He was raised a Mormon, became an acidhead in college, and now believes
pretty much everything. Or not. He is probably the only former Republican
County Chairman in America who can call himself a hippie mystic without
lowering his voice.

He is separated and has three daughters under the age of 13. He lost the love of
his life, Dr. Cynthia Horner, when she died in April, 1994.

He lives in Pinedale, Wyoming, New York, New York, On the Road, and
Cyberspace.

When he feels like it, he writes for a variety of publications including Wired,
Communications of the ACM, Mondo 2000, and Microtimes.

He likes:
Children, pure speculation, music, driving across Nevada, love, being
alone, being with people, skiing, flying, watching coral reefs, talking,
listening, exploring New York City, having written.

affect the way I analyze ideas and issues. I'm known around my

I've also written poetry now and then.

                             Moon???

Have you ever been to a part of the world
Where people don't believe in the Moon
And saying that you've seen it brings howls of cruel laughter?
Where the silvery light shining in the night
Is a thing that defies explanation
And the tides are caused by the breathing of the oysters?

Have you ever been to a part of the world
Where people don't believe in the Sun
And everyone is acting just like it wasn't shining?
Where to walk down the road in the midday heat
You are careful to carry a lantern,
Or you have to move as if stumbling in the darkness?

Have you ever been to a part of the world
Where people don't believe in the Moon
And people that've seen it are locked up in the nut house?
Where the young lovers go out beside the sea
And they watch the reflections of nothing,
And they never talk about what they think they see there?

Have you ever been to a part of the world
Where people don't believe in the rain
But keep on getting wet without any earthly reason?
Where you go with your friends for a picnic lunch
While you fear what you'd better not mention,
And it's just delusions you have to come in out of?

Have you ever been to a part of the world
Where people don't believe
In love???

Hello, it's me again, last seen in 1993 or so when I was fired by moe as
thewell staff bookkeeper. That was OK, my life was in turmoil. Actually,
Henderson was my alias for 25 years as a fugitive from injustice. After
dealing with that issue, I have returned to using my family name of
Tierney, but kept Patricia because I still don't like Phyllis. So now, I
am Patricia Phyllis Tierney or still cablue.

In the meantime, my life includes three children. My son, Eddy Parry,
bornin 1984, just turned 16 years. He attends School of the Arts (public high
school) as a visual artist. My older daughter, Michaela Parry, was born
in 1990 while I worked at the well. She is almost 10 years old and plans
on doing a calendar for 2001 using her own art. She wants to rule the
world.

My youngest daughter, Jacqueline Tierney Gault, is dgault's only child.
David met me when he worked as the system administrator at the well.
Jackie was diagnosed with an extremely rare degenerative neurological
disorder called Lafora Disease on July 27, 2000, three days before her
fifth birthday. It's not good, but at least we know. Due to Jackie's
medical condition, I quit working as a tax preparer and bookkeeper in
April to be her full-time caregiver and mom. The doctors insist on email,
so here I am.

Serving you since July 15, 1995.

Where I Live: Berkeley (my second time in the East Bay; now since 2003)

The WELL was my introduction to online life (1995-98), and I got spoiled.
After 6 months away, I realized I couldn't find the same quality of
discourse anywhere else, so I came back.

I'm a professional musician and now grad student (with many, many years of
that ahead). I've been in the Bay Area since '94, hough I've lived my
entire life in California, mostly in the nether regions (San Diego, and
four miserable years in LA--sorry, I tried it, and still hated it, so I
 feel free to bash away).

In my copious free time, I'm a baseball fan who follows the Giants (and
the A's, to a lesser extent). In fact, having grown up in San Diego hating
the Dodgers, it's a pleasure to be here where I can continue to do the
 same.

I used to go to movies a great deal more than I do now. I chalk it up to
the all-pervasive "industry" presence in LA. (See, I'm bashing already!)
Now I'm more likely to seek out live theatre, appreciating other
performers as I hope I'm appreciated.

Also, there's been a second Mrs. (caput) since 2000. She's lovely in every
conceivable way (if you don't mind fish-eating vegetarians who make you
 change into indoor shoes!).

Pretty, witty, and wise--well, two out of three ain't bad.

Dennis Lee Donley - July 19, 1950 to October 25, 2021. Born in Port Hueneme,
CA, Dennis graduated from Hueneme High School in 1968, received a B.A. in
History (with Honors) from UC Santa Barbara in 1973, where he also earned a
California Standard Teaching Credential. He went on to earn a California
School Librarian Credential and a Masters in Library Science degree from San
Jose State University.

He worked as a school librarian in the San Diego Unified School District from
1975-2009, primarily at Point Loma High and Hoover High. In addition he
taught part-time for California State University, Los Angeles, and was
involved in the Adult Education program at San Diego City Schools for over
three decades, serving as a teacher, a librarian and a writer of curriculum,
as well as coordinating independent studies. He managed a distance-learning
program at Hoover well before the Covid- 19 days. He worked as a part-time
reference librarian at Cuyamaca College for several years, and in retirement
worked part-time as a librarian for the City of San Diego from 2012-2020.

Dennis loved to read, surf (well, once upon a time) watch baseball and listen
to live music. His musical tastes were wide-ranging, but most of all he
loved the Grateful Dead, attending well over 100 shows and contributing to
several books on the band, including DeadBase and The Deadhead???s Taping
Compendium, Volumes 1-3 plus the Addendum. He authored a blog chronicling
the Ventura and Santa Barbara Psychedelic Music Scene 1960-1975
(https://earlwarrenshowgroundsetal.blogspot.com/) based on primary sources
(and his is wealth of knowledge from having attended so many of the shows he
chronicled) and interviews with such pioneering promoters as Jim Salzer and
Sepp Donahower He also had an interest of photography, and loved to shoot
sunsets and travel destinations.

Most of all, he loved being with his family. From coaching youth sports to
traveling to Sedona and Yosemite, to the annual Thanksgiving BBQ turkey
dinner (cooked on a charcoal Weber kettle), Dennis loved to be with his
family. Family drives, baseball games and trips to the beach were frequent.
Once he retired from full-time work, Dennis and Ruth began to travel to the
Hawaiian Islands, making up for lost time by taking eleven trips in an eight-
year period. Kauai was their favorite island, and he was known to remark
that some of the finest moments of his life were spent walking on deserted
Hawaiian beaches with Ruth.

Dennis leaves without a lot of regrets, after all, he: watched the births of
both of his children, saw Jimi Hendrix play guitar and heard Janis Joplin
sing, watched Mickey Mantle and Tony Gwynn play baseball, spent 90 minutes
with Ted Williams touring Ted's alma mater, surfed alongside the great
names of surfing, and was surrounded by a loving family, friends, and
colleagues throughout his life. He married the love of his life in his early
twenties and they remained married until his passing. He practiced a
profession he loved for 42 years. He was a sober member of Alcoholics
Anonymous going on thirty-two years. It's hard to ask for much more than
that!

He is survived by his wife (and prom date) of 49 years, Ruth, his mother,
Joan, sister Debbie, children Eric & Evan, daughter-in-law Stephanie, as well

I've been on the Well for ages now. I started off as lp but have been green since about 1994, I think. Currently, I'm the art and poetry editor of Bay Nature Magazine, as well as doing some other editing, designing, and writing on my own. Just finished editing a book of reverent American landscape poetry.
Host of the Editors' Conference (g edit), the pond conf (g pond.ind), and discuss.ind, a really unusal conference where we, uh, discuss things. A gentle, thoughtful place.
I was the editor, publisher and designer of Yellow Silk for several decades (hasn't been a magazine since 1996, though there have been three YS-related books since then); there's another conf YS.pri, for readers of the magazine. Hardly anyone goes there :^) See http://www.yellowsilk.org.
Avid gardener (with pond, of course), backyard bird conservator, and consultant to owners of craftsman-style homes about art for their homes. See http://www.craftsmanart.com. Some day I'll make an actual website!

I live in NE California. I love to sew and play music. I am learning to
belly dance. I love my cat, Cody, love to read, hang out on the Well, listen
to the radio, do crafts, and write.

My partner is (cjb), and we live off the grid. We make our own electricity
and don't have a telephone. We go down to the little town to make phone calls

or get on the Well. It's a different way of life.

I am newly obsessed with Charles Bukowski and love to read his poetry.

The thing to reiterate is that every Christian knows exactly what its like
to be an atheist with respect to the beliefs of Muslims, for instance.
Muslims have the same reasons for being Muslim as Christians have for
being Christian. They have a book they're sure was written or dictated by
the creator of the universe because the book says that it was written or
dictated by the creator of the universe. Christians look at Muslim
discourse and find it fundamentally unpersuasive. Christians arent lying
awake at night worrying about whether they should convert to Islam. Why
not? Because Muslims can't really back up their claims. They are clearly
engaged in a style of discourse that is just not intellectually honest.
It's not purposed to genuine inquiry into the nature of the world. It is a
reiteration of dogma, and they are clearly committed to a massive program
of self-deception. Every Christian recognizes this about every religion
other than Christianity. So every Christian knows exactly what it is like
to be atheist. They just don't turn the same candor and intellectual
honesty on to their own faith.

I grew up in Berkeley, and live there now after many years in Santa Cruz
and a few years in Phoenix, Arizona. I have been working in the health
education field for 18 years, first as an AIDS educator/program manager.
Currently I have been working in the field of women's health, esp. as it
pertains to women over 40 who are underinsured or uninsured. I identify as
Jewish, pagan, a film lover and a voracious reader (politics, mysteries,
memoirs--last books read were Working Fire by Zac Unger and The Game by
Laurie R. King).

unclear.270: The Morphology of Systems Collapse

unclear.270.12: Catherine Bateson (mcb) Fri 7 Feb 97 06:05

If we think of Mike's "group" as a system, we have an example of
system resilience, working around a missing part and attaining a new
stability.
Often consciously constructed systems lack that kind of redundancy
and therefore collapse easily. Maybe in order to survive the group
had to reshape itself without Mike as an organism might learn to
function without a limb, etc. But Mike is also a system , and
accustomed to being part of the larger system. Losing it is he
like a fish removed from a lake? No, the coupling was much looser.
It occurs to me that the group can also be seen as various dyads.
Maybe Mike can revive some of the dyads that were most important to
him one by one, new/old relationships/sub-systems.

unclear.270.21: Catherine Bateson (mcb) Sun 9 Feb 97 08:49

Maybe one reason humans construct systems with insufficient
redundancy and therefore little resilience is the set of ideas
called efficiency or rationality. Natural systems have a good deal
of slop in them.

unclear.270.37: Catherine Bateson (mcb) Sat 22 Feb 97 07:10

One of the things biologists have been exploring lately is
"programmed cell death." It turns out that many kinds of cells
have built in mechanisms for putting themselves out of business, eg
special enzymes, generally at a time appropriate for the larger
system. Larger systems often depend on the death
of subsystems. Human society depends on death.

Formerly , formerly . A wild man, widely loved. A couple of
representative posts he wrote about himself:

bodymods.ind.2.18: (miles) Thu 19 Apr 07 12:30

I"m Miles. I like bodymods. I have full sleeve tattos on both arms,
and smaller pieces on each leg. Buncha piercings: 3 in my left ear,
 3 in my right, 2 of which are stretched with grommets of around 3/8";
1 nostril piercing; and a Prince Albert. I had a frenum done at the
same time as my PA but my girlfriend found it uncomfortable so I
took it out. I've also had my nipples pierced twice, and they migrated
out both times. I'm trying to decide if I want to go through that
again. I really like the look and feel of pierced nipples but mine
are very very tiny. Anyway, hi, all.

firearms.ind.2.392: (miles) Thu 17 May 07 17:05

I'm Miles. My father was self-employed as a gunsmith for pretty
much his entire working life, and, as a result, I started shooting
when I was big enough to hold a gun. He had quite a collection
of everything from flintlocks to WWII-era machine guns; it was
always a treat to get to fire the MP40/Schmeisser, B.A.R., and
the Thompson 45. Mostly, though, my shooting has consisted of
plinking and some bench-rest target shooting at the 50 and 100
yard ranges we had next to the house. Ah, the salad days.

I've been gunless for much of my adult life but a lot of my
friends in LA are avid shooters and I've gotten interested in
guns again. A few weeks ago, I made my first-ever firearms
purchase, a .40 caliber Glock Model 22. There's an indoor range
a few miles from my house and I've been going there once or
twice a week for target practice. I find target shooting very
relaxing and focusing and am really enjoying the Glock -- it's
 a fine bit of engineering.

GO placidly amid the noise & waste, & remember what comfort there may be in
owning a piece thereof. Avoid quiet & passive persons unless you are in need
of sleep. Rotate your tires. Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself
and heed well their advice even though they be turkeys; know what to kiss and
when. Consider that two wrongs never make a right but that three do.
Whenever possible, put people on hold. Be comforted that in the face of all
aridity & disillusionment and despite the changing fortunes of time, there is
always a big fortune in computer maintenance. Remember the Pueblo. Strive at
all times to bend, fold, spindle, & mutilate. Know yourself; if you need
help, call the FBI. Exercise caution in your daily affairs, especially with
those persons closest to you. The lemon on your left for instance. Be assured
that a walk through the ocean of all souls would scarcely get your feet wet.
Fall not in love therefore; it will stick to your face. Gracefully surrender
the things of youth, birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan: and let not the sands of
time get in your lunch. Hire people with hooks. For a good time, call 606-
4311; ask for Ken. Take heart amid the deepening gloom that your dog is
finally getting enough cheese; and reflect that whatever misfortune may be
your lot, it could only be worse in Milwaukee. You are a fluke of the
universe; you have no right to be here, and whether you can hear it or not,
the universe is laughing behind your back. Therefore make peace with your God
whatever you conceive Him to be: Hairy Thunderer or Cosmic Muffin. With all
its hopes, dreams, promises, & urban renewal, the world continues to
deteriorate. Give up.

Berkeley's my home, and I love it. I'm single, have two daughters, aged 20 and 12, and teach gifted 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in a year-round public school. Learning about new ideas excites me, and I love people with a sense of humor who are able to join me in laughing at our own human foibles. I hold a wholehearted belief that boredom is a self-inflicted personality defect.

I was born in Cedar Rapids in 1950. I have a son who
was born in 1989 in SF. I'm straight, single and disease
free. I live in the Mission. I'm a Republican. I figure
being a liberal Republican is a lot like being a moderate
or conservative Democrat, neither will get much respect
from either party.) I go to the Unitarian Church (I'm t
heir token Republican.)

I rode my bicycle from SF to Washington DC in 1985.

"You must just acknowledge deep in your heart of hearts that
people are supposed to fuck. It is our main purpose in life,

just ways of passing the time until you can fuck again. Well,
maybe not eating chocolate mousse. If it is made with good Swiss
chocolate and topped off with Devon cream, eating chocolate mousse
is almost as good as fucking."

I'm one of those grizzled Well veterans who first communicated here at 300
baud uphill -- both ways. In the day I hosted the First Amendment
conference (someone of the new generation should revive the conference;
gopod knows the First Amendment needs some revival). I also hosted Desktop
Publishing back when that was different from regular publishing.

In 2005 I retired after 33+ years as a college journalism teacher. In
2006, I began my latest incarnation, as a widower. My wonderful wife and
partner of 34 years, Sandy, died April 17, 2006, of metastasized breast
cancer. She was 62. (Details and a tribute page to her at
www.sandysposse.net).

So now it's on to the Third Act. We shall see what that brings.

I live in Forestville, western Sonoma County, about a mile from the
Russian River. I spend a lot of time bicycling. I
hang out in north, less often in media and books and macintosh. I no
longer get email on the Well (damn spam) but at

I'm a writer and near-futurist... also a longtime collaborator with various
members of the Notorious Hooligan Band and The Altered Statesmen, both as a
lyric writer and companion on the Road. You may also know me as the biographer
to the infamous criminal neurologist, Professor Anton Saurian. At present, I
continue research toward the definitive collection of the Professor's
writings, "Fever Dreams: The Secret Letters of Anton Saurian", long suppressed
and yet to find a publisher.

Been pokin' around the GD scene since the early 70's, and online since '87,
first via the WELL. I first got entranced by technology back in the mid-70's,
while a theater student and apprentice director. When faced with an
intractable problem in controlling my hyper-thyroid lighting plot for a
production of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", I turned to an engineering
student and learned that engineers solve problems.

My day job is at my own company, Interactive Guild, Inc.

I have been a member since July of 1990 (even tho' the official "finger" says
June 1991). Has it really been almost thirteen years? I always used to say "
You can guess where I live..." but I'm actually in the process of leaving Las
Vegas for Northern California. See? I'm always either too late or too early! (
Jan 2003)

OK, so I lied. Either that or else I was too early or too late, like I said. I
actually ended up moving to Ann Arbor, MI. Has it really been almost 18 years?
(May 2008)

Guess what? I???m still in Ann Arbor and, after becoming a widow back in 2003
and shutting down my interest in partnering I serendipitously met my partner-
to-be (all very Hallmark channel, I know). We will celebrate our 11th
anniversary in May 2019. I have learned to live with my disability in a
wheelchair, and despite a ledger-load of diagnoses, I am actually doing better
than I have for a decade. Has it really been 29 years? (March 2019)

Pardon me for knocking, folks, but I used to live
here and wanted to see how things looked these
days. My new house is a lot like it, except that
I have lizards on the lawn and yuccas in the yard.
The coyotes have been on strike ever since the
satellite dish was replaced with digital cable.

As my Uncle Mo once told me: "Get in, get out,
get over it." Unfortunately, I've inherited
everything from old Mo except the money...I just
can't find the money. The ravens told me the
coyotes have hidden it until they are allowed to
watch "Reading Rainbow" again, but you can never
  trust a raven.
