The Band

Bangers and Mash started playing together in 1994, and have been performing music for English country and historical couple dancing ever since. We’re regulars at events for PEERS (the Period Events and Entertainment Recreation Society) as well as for BACDS (the Bay Area Country Dance Society).

We’ve done a number of formal balls, as well as playing for innumerable dance series. For fifteen years now we’ve performed at Fezziwig’s Warehouse, the community dance stage of the Great Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco. We also play weddings, parties and private dances, of course. Feel free to use the links in the photo caption to contact any of us for more information about the band’s availability...

Upcoming Events

Saturday, September 4, 2018, 8pm to midnight
PEERS’ “The Doctor Dances with Jane: 1795” Ball
Alameda Elks’ Lodge
2255 Santa Clara Avenue, Alameda

A costume crossover event featuring Doctor Who and Jane Austen. An evening of period english country dances, as well as couple dances and simple period quadrilles. We’ll also be playing for the pre-ball workshop at 7pm. For further details, please see the event webpage on the PEERS site. There’s also a Facebook event page.

Saturday, November 3, 2018, 8:00pm
Les Bal de Vampires
Alameda Elks’ Lodge
2255 Santa Clara Avenue, Alameda

We hope the vampires aren’t shy about coming out for this wonderful ball’s Silver Anniversary. The 25th installment of this fantastic costume ball has two dance floors: we’ll be playing upstairs with traditional terpsichorean tunes, and there will be a discotheque in the basement Rathskeller hall. Finery of all historical periods are welcome, as with all PEERS events, costume is "admired but not required"; event webpage.

Weekends, Saturday, November 17 to Sunday, December 23
Great Dickens Christmas Fair
Cow Palace Exhibition Halls
2600 Geneva Avenue, Daly City

We’re delighted to return to play for the participatory dance stage ("Fezziwig’s Warehouse") at this sprawling fantastic celebration. This year Dickens Fair runs for six weekends, plus the Friday after Thanksgiving. If you’ve wanted to learn to waltz, polka, schottische, mazurka, or brush up on any number of set dances in the English Country style, this is the place to be. For more iformation, check the link above.

Our Recordings

Breakfast at Fezziwig’s

Our first CD was released in 2002, and is a 24-cut collection of our favorite country and couple dances, recorded in real time and at dance length before a live audience. The tunes range from Playford tunes of the 1650s to recently composed waltzes. We named "Breakfast at Fezziwig’s" in honor of our friends at the Dickens Fair. It’s out of print right now, but we’ll be reissuing it soon. Check out the Breakfast at Fezziwig’s webpage for a tracklist.

Sir Roger de Coverley

Our second CD was released in 2010, and is a collection of longer pieces (only 17 cuts). Still more of our favorite country and couple dances, recorded in real time and at dance length. This one has many of the our favorite ballroom standards, as well as a few choice recently-composed waltzes. For more information, including notes on the album, check out the webpage.

Have us play your event

We’re available to play weddings, private dances and dinners, or grand public spectacles. While none of us are dancing masters, we are well acquainted with the Bay Area’s best, and can help you find the right teacher for your party. Or we can play hours of soothing music for dinners, wedding receptions, or office parties. Our email links are above, or you can call Craig at 415/282-1110.
