Appalshop is a media-arts center, located in the heart of the Appalachian coalfields of eastern Kentucky. Just a few miles from the Virginia border, this region was once described by former Secretary of the Interior James Watt as a "National Sacrifice Area". What he did not realize about central Appalachia were the many generations of sacrifice endured by the people that have inhabited the region since the early 1700's.
Exploited by loggers and later by companies looking for minerals in the rich mountain soil, the people of Appalachia have endured and improved themselves, despite depictions by outsiders as poor, backward "hillbillies".
