Mapping Where We Live
Goal/Objective:
Students become familiar with reading a city map by looking at a map of
their
home neighborhood on the computer.
Description:
Students type their home address and zip code into a web site, and it shows
them a map of their neighborhood. Students can zoom in to see
more detail.
Students can draw out a copy of the map, and include street names and
landmarks they think are important.
Materials:

Home street address of each student written down for the student to use.

Computers with internet connection.

Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.

Pencil and paper for each student, if you want them to draw a copy of the
map.
Procedure:

Click here to open up the Yahoo
Maps Page.

Click in the boxes to type in your street address, city and state.

Click on "Get Map."

Use the arrows between "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" to adjust the scale of
the map.

Students can draw out a copy of the map, including streets, street names,
houses or other features.

Use the Mapquest
site to map an international address, such as the town you came from
in México.

Click in the boxes on the left of the page to type in your address.
Don’t forget the zip code! You can also type the name of a city in
another country, for example the city your family came from.

Click “Get Map” underneath the boxes.

Look at the map.

If you want to get a closer look, click in the bubble on the left side
next to the words “Recenter and zoom in.” Then click on the red star
on the map.
