Goal/Objective:
Students write and publish their work on the internet, and learn the basics
of web design.
Description:
Students write a piece and add links and graphics to it using Netscape
Composer or WebWorks. Students can improvise and write up personal home
pages, with information about what they like to do and where they're from
and what their dreams are. For examples of kid's home pages, see Kid
Sites. For ideas on what to write about, see this Web
Page Template. They can also type in stories or reports they
have written in class, and publish them on the Community Web Site.
Materials:
-
Computers with internet connection.
-
Netscape Composer or WebWorks.
Procedure using Netscape Composer: (See the Technology
Resource Teacher for WebWorks instructions)
To Enter Text in a Web Page
-
Double click on Netscape Navigator to open Netscape.
-
Go to the File menu, go to New and click on Blank Page.
-
Now you can start typing.
-
Netscape Composer has most of the same options as a word processing program.
If you want to change the font size or style of something you have typed,
first click and drag the mouse across it to select it.
-
Click on the arrow next to the number in the center of the toolbar.
You can adjust the font size by choosing another number.
-
Click on the "A" buttons at the top of the page to make the text bold,
italic or underlined.
Fancy Text Features:
-
To center text or align it to the right, go to Format, go to Align and
choose the one you want.
-
Netscape has different formats you can choose for titles and headings.
Go to the box with the arrow at the top left corner. Click on the
arrow to see the different options. Heading 1 is the largest and
Heading 6 is the smallest.
-
Click on the Spelling button in the upper right hand corner to check spelling.
To Put in a Graphic
From Paint
-
You can create a graphic in Paint and put it into your web page.
-
In Paint, use the dotted line rectangle to select your graphic. Choose
"Copy" from the Edit menu.
-
Go back to your web page and click where you want to put the graphic.
Choose "Paste" from the Edit menu.
-
Say "OK" to the box that appears. Select "High" in the next box and
click "OK."
-
Your image will appear on the page. But you need to save it!
-
Click on the image with your right mouse key. Choose the "Save Image
As..." option.
-
Save the image under a new name in the same directory as your web page.
-
Now, double click on the image to see the "Image Properties" box.
-
Click on the "Choose File" button and select the new image name.
-
Back in the "Image Properties" box, you will see a long file name for the
image next to the "Choose File" button. Erase everything from that
file path name except the name of the image itself. For example,
that box should contain just "apple.jpg" instead of "Anna/Home/WebPage/apple.jpg."
This will ensure that the image shows up when you put the whole page up
on the internet.
-
Save your document and reopen it to test if the image shows up.
From Another Web Page
-
You can use a graphic from another web page, as long as it isn't copyrighted.
There are lots of pages that provide free graphics to use on your web page.
Do a search for "Clip Art" on Yahoo.
-
While you are browsing a page, click on an image you want to use with your
right mouse key.
-
Choose "Save Image As..." and give the image file a name, for example "newimage.jpg."
-
Back in your own web page, click on the Image button to insert a new image.
-
Choose the image file "newimage.jpg." It will show up in your page.
To Put in a Link to Another Page
-
If you find a web page you like, you can put a link to it on your page.
-
In the page you want, go to the white box next to the word "Location",
where the page's URL or address is displayed.
-
Click on the address with your right mouse key and choose Copy.
-
Back in your own web page, highlight the words that you want to link.
-
Click with your right mouse key and choose "Create link using selected..."
-
In the "Link Properties" box that appears, you will see a long white box
for the address to link to.
-
Click in the box with your right mouse key and choose Paste.
-
Now choose OK and the text should be linked to that page.
-
You can test the link by saving and then clicking the "Preview" button
at the top of the page.
