Image of the Incredible Somis Wall of Dope

The Incredible Somis Wall of dope was this pot plantation the cops found in Somis, California (near Camarillo, in Ventura County) in 1991. It was planted outdoors, but in a deep valley between two remote farms, so it could only be spotted from the air. It even sported a sophisticated gravity-powered drip irrigation system. We got to watch the fine officers of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department chop down the eleven-foot-high budding stalks and remove them — by helicopter. It was one of the first stories I covered as a full-time news reporter.
