Decided to send Sid a package rather than calling.
Decided to start with the drawings. To tell him the whole story.
How I had been to the North Bay. How I had worked up the courage to follow a
lead to the home of a man who had been in Luke's unit.
How I had seen Marilee. My drawing of Luke's shaving kit on the wall.
How I had seen Jerry who looked just like Luke, and how Jerry had
returned
my book of drawings.
"And so," I wrote, "I did not let Jerry see Luke's picture,
and I do not know what he thought when he left. He was cold and I gave
him Luke's sweater. The one I have carried with me for so many years.
And then after he had gone, I put Luke's picture in the top drawer of my
bureau."
"Sid," I wrote. "All this happened before I got your last letter."
