I did know that all the time he was fighting in Italy Sid had expected his childhood sweetheart Susan to be waiting for him when he got back home. But she didn't wait for him. She married someone else.

But I never knew until Sid's letter came last week what a terrible blow it had been.

In the letter he told me that he hadn't talked about it too much to me because it seemed so trivial compared to death. Luke's death. And because I did not talk to him about Luke very much.

Susan had married a business man in White Plains. Someone his family knew.

"I couldn't stay and constantly be confronted with it," Sid wrote. "That is why I went West."
