Because part of the accordion-fold tail was inaccessible inside the book, and could not be pulled out, the meaning of the whole had assumed the aura of a mystery story in which rather than rushing headlong to finish, the reader was tempted to skip to the end, but the final pages had been torn out, Caydance observed, as she documented the icons that marched seemingly haphazardously around the outside of the book-object-without-a-key,
The painting of three cakes on separate stands that was reproduced in miniature on the white painted exterior surface was clearly by Wayne Thiebaud, but because Thiebaud had made many paintings and drawings of cakes, it would be difficult to find out what museum or which collector owned this work.
"Thiebaud's 3-cakes with shadows painting has no obvious significance other than a probably unintended reminder of a frequently visited five-star bakery not far from where I live," she wrote in her notebook.
