training football In the first half, Stanford Quarterback John Paye led a 71-yard eight play drive which culminated in a touchdown when Tight End Eric Snelson eluded the Huskies defense in the end zone. A near perfect performance, Caydance thought, but Huskies Quarterback Chris Chandler evened the score -- until with only a few minutes left in the half, Paye reached Henley and then Scott in a drive that culminated with a 3rd and 18 thrilling touchdown pass to back-in-the-lineup Wide Receiver Jeff James.

Sadly, hot Husky kicker Jeff Jaeger (Caydance had seen his picture in the program, but the adjective probably referred to his field-goal percentage) kicked a 42-yard field goal, and at half time the score was Stanford 14 - Washington 10.

Brushing under the stadium seat the crumbs from the Black Forest Ham and Gruyere cheese sandwich that she had packed along with a can of beer painted to look like Coca Cola (which was an artist’s skill she had learned at Cal), Caydance watched the Stanford Band make a suggestive formation on the field -- as she waited for the return of Griff to the sidelines.
