when the foregound and the background merged
Following the paths of Cézanne,
Erle Loran traveled throughout Provence,
painting, photographing.
During the War,
detained by an armed soldier
for painting outdoors in the California hills,
he retreated to his studio,
where I saw those paintings of beaches.
Unusual rocks leading out into the ocean,
like the Giant's Causeway off the coast of Ireland.
Built, so the legend goes, by Fionn mac Cumhaill
to cross the sea to Scotland.
