I painted Hiram Powers looking.
At me with recognition
as I struggled to portray a sculptor's life and work
in his own expressive face.
Remembering. That the Irish founder
of Hiram Powers' family in America,
who came to Massachusetts in the 17th century,
might have been an indentured servant
at the time when the English monarchy
sold thousands of Irish men, women, and children
into slavery in the New World.
