Recollected on this early morning, painting track
My room in Mabel's parents' home
looked out on a Berkeley garden.
Once only flowers.
Now flowers and vegetables.
Grown by Mabel's mother
and served in large portions
to soldiers training on the campus
and women who came to the East Bay
to work in the Richmond factories.
Far from their own homes,
our house was a welcome refuge.
