Amlak
Amlak Tafari, an English-born Jamaican, is an internationally
acclaimed musician. When he was just six, he picked up
the recorder and a mouth organ. However, his musical career began
at the tender age of 10 when he joined a West Indian
steel band at church. When he was 14, he joined his first reggae band,
playing the rhythm and lead guitar. With this band, Amlak went on
to tour Europe and Africa while
also performing as rhythm guitarist for Musical Youth.
He began playing bass guitar; working and recording
with such artists as I Jahman Levi, Pablo
Moses, Culture, Beres Hammond, Luciano, and the legendary Big Youth from
Jamaica. He first joined Pato Banton's band, the
Reggae Revolution, in 1989 as rhythm lead guitarist -- switching to bass
guitar in 1991 after brief stints with Lieutenant Stitchie, Earl Sixteen
and Mikey Dread. In January 1995, Pato Banton and
the Reggae Revolution skyrocketed to #1 in the U.K. and various
countries around the world with "Baby Come Back", recorded with UB40.
Their hit song,
"Bubbling Hot", recorded with Ranking Roger of The English Beat,
charted at #1 in various countries
world wide. They've also had chart success with long-time friend Sting
on "The
Cowboy Song" and "Spirits in the Material World".
Amlak Tafari has toured internationally in North America,
South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa. Among his many tours,
Amlak's favorite was the recent 50th Anniversary Bob Marley Tour, featuring
Ziggy Marley,
the original Wailers, the I-Three's, Pato Banton
and Jimmy Cliff.
Amlak has also performed as frontman/MC for dance
band Piano Man, whose song 'Blurred"
climbed to #6 in the British pop charts. He appeared on MTV's biggest
ever four-country
simultaneous broadcast, featuring many of the worlds top artists.
Amlak recently co-produced and programmed a debut
"My Girl" and its B-side "My Love" for long-standing
friend Dennis Seaton, former lead singer of Musical Youth. Dennis's new
band, XMY, will be working closely
with Amlak to produce their debut album. He has also co-produced tracks
internationally, working with Boom Shaka, a California-based band, and
in South America, Djembe, an up-and-coming Brazilian reggae band.
Tafari has been co-writing with various artists,
including Pato Banton. He wrote and performed the Spanish DJ-rap for
the track "Ven A Mi Fiesta" for Pato's latest album "Stay Positive". He
also played bass, as well as additional lead
and rhythm guitar on the album, demonstrating his linguistic adaptability
and unique artistic expression.
He has appeared in Bass Player magazine representing
Dean Markley Strings and uses David Eden Bass Systems; both with
whom he has full endorsements.
A native of Birmingham in the U.K., also home of
Joan Armatrading, UB40 and Steel Pulse,
Amlak's versatility ranges from producing, arranging and song-writing.
