The Essentials
Use problem-based projects (preferably student’s original problem) to incorporate new ways of thinking.
- Incremental learning allows new content to be placed in old structures
- Constructing new structures is enabled by having a basis in familiar content
- Include explicit ‘requirement’ for reflection
Remove punishment for errors
- Constructing new fundamental understanding requires error and correction. Learning in this situation is a function of making errors and correcting them.
- Create assignments with explicit evaluation criteria, and iterate assignments until full credit is achieved (student’s option)
