Has anyone here ever ridden from this area to upstate NY? What routes did you take? My preliminary thinking is to ride up route 15 all the way to Elmira and then east on old 17. Has anyone ever ridden up route 15 any distance? Is it a good way to go?
I have little experience at long distance riding and would like to hear any suggestions or advice that anyone might want to relay.

--You seem like you're on the right track. I'd stick as close to the Susquehanna River valley as possible. PA is a hilly state. The river cuts through all that. I rode across PA and the Susquehanna was the best route. I scoped it out on a state topographical map before I left. I'm glad I did. The few places I veered from the river, BAM, major hill.
Anyway, I followed the valley of the Western Branch from thet head waters near Emporium to the confluence with the Eastern Branch at Northumberland. From there I followed the eastern valley to Wilkes Barre.
Go straihgt to Binghampton, forget Elmira. Consider take 15 to Northumberland and head east along the valley on 11. You may want to go as far east as Scranton. From there, loop east of I-81 on 171 or take 92 and 29 just west of I-81. On a totaly different tip, maybe follow 15 to where the Western Branch actually turns to the west and take 220 northeast from there.
Beats me what's best. Check out a topo map if ya want to.

So, I was wondering if you'd ever made the ride, and if you have any details on your chosen route, average distance per day, etc, etc.
I attempted the ride in August with my nephew. Unfortunately we never finished it. But I promised myself that I would attempt the ride again (probably in 1996 sometime) and finish it.

For the past five or six years my nephew, Joe, and I have been talking about riding our bikes from my home in the Washington, DC area to his home in the Binghamton, NY area. About eight or nine months ago we decided 1995 would be the year.
I sent out queries on the Net looking for possible bicycle routes between here and there. I received a lot of responses and finally came up with a route by combining part of Section 3 of the "Maine to Virginia Bicycle Route" from Bikecentennial (or Adventure Cycling) and part of the "TranSylvania Bicycle Trail". I made up cue sheets from these maps. We broke the ride up into six days, each day ranging from about 60 miles to about 90 miles for a total ride of about 450 miles. I can e-mail the cue sheets to anyone interested.
We took the week of August 6 off from our jobs.
Joe rented a car and drove down to my house the evening of August 4. The next morning, Saturday, we left my house in Falls Church, Va at about 7:45.
I carried a backpack on my back containing shorts, shirts, and socks enough for five days, a pair of walk-about shoes, and some bathroom stuff. Joe carried a bag on the back of his bike. I commute to work with a backpack and am used to carrying it.
On Day 1 we rode 92 miles. It was moderately hilly. During the day's ride I was stung by a bee just below my left eye and was almost hit by a car on two different occasions. The heat was blistering ... literally. At one point in the afternoon I looked at my upper arm to see that blisters had formed from the heat. The mercury hit 98 degrees that day. Late in the afternoon my legs began cramping which has never happened to me before. At one point my legs locked up on me while climbing a hill. I suppose I didn't drink enough water even though it seemed that I was constantly putting the water bottle to my lips. Joe felt exceptionally good despite the riding conditions. My cousin, Ray Lake, met us at about the 60 mile mark and rode to Reisterstown, Md with us. He can certainly attest to how badly I was doing at the time. Once we got to Reisterstown my cousin turned around and rode back to his car just as an afternoon shower began. Joe and I rode 8 miles out of our way on Reisterstown Road to find a hotel room. At this point both of us just wanted to get off of our bikes. We ended up staying at the Hilton just inside the Baltimore beltway. We arrived at the Hilton at about 5:30 PM. On this day we didn't measure our riding time but I would say we were off our bikes for about 2 hours throughout the elapsed time.
When we woke up Sunday morning it was pouring outside. The weather report called for rain all day so we decided to rest that day. I was thankful for the rain. I needed the day of rest.
On Monday we rode 82 miles. From Baltimore we headed east/northeast towards Philadelphia. We had planned it so that by the end of the third day of riding we would be just outside of Philadelphia. I had hoped that we would have the wind at our backs for Day 2 and Day 3 of the ride. As it turned out, though, the storm that passed through the area on Sunday left a wind out of the east in its wake. Luckily it wasn't a strong wind. This day's ride was very hilly. We left at about 8:15 AM and arrived in Marietta at about 4:45 PM with a riding time of just under 6 hours.
On Tuesday we rode 55.5 miles on very hilly countryside. We had a headwind for the entire day. Our riding time was about 4:20 while our elapsed time was about 6:20. We spent the night in Morgantown.
We ended Day 3 of our ride short. We were exhausted. The last two days of the ride consisted of constant downhills and uphills. Many of the uphills were long and grueling. Unfortunately, we couldn't afford another day off. Joe needed to be in Binghamton on Saturday and we didn't complete our planned Day 3 ride. So, we still had 3+ days of riding ahead of us.
On Wednesday, Day 4, we rode 32 miles with a headwind the entire way. At about the 15 mile mark both Joe and I decided to bag the ride. Both our butts were terribly sore, Joe's thighs were burning, and my hands and wrists hurt badly. I've been having trouble with my hands hurting on long rides this whole year. They've never hurt in the past. We rode to the closest city of size, Pottstown, and purchased bus tickets to Binghamton. We purchased the tickets at about noon. The bus wasn't arriving in Pottstown until about 8 PM. We ate lunch at a great diner in the middle of town and discussed the situation. We thought about renting a car instead but we could only find round-trip rentals. And then we got the brilliant idea of renting a U-Haul. We found one place that had one truck available for a one-way rental. It cost about $120. The bus tickets cost about $90. So, the cost wasn't too much more plus we didn't have to wait around town until 8 PM. It was worth it.
I must say that for the most part the ride was beautiful ... what we completed of it. We passed through a couple of state parks that were simply gorgeous. Most of the country roads were great for riding (except for the non-stop hills). The maps I got for mapping out the route were great. There were no problems to speak of in the route we took (except for the non-stop hills :).
If I were to attempt this ride again I would go in a cooler part of the year, I probably wouldn't wear a backpack, and I would allot more time to the ride (or I would plot out a more direct route).

I have the cue sheet(s) on my computer at home. I'm at work right now. I'll send them to you later. I have one big cue sheet for the whole distance and I also have a set of cue sheets that breaks up the big cue sheet into 6 daily rides. I've modified the daily cue sheets slightly since my attempt in August and having learned better places to spend the night.
I also have mapped out a ride to the northern part of the Outer Banks in North Carolina if you're interested. I plan on doing that ride in 1996. It should be much flatter than the ride to NY. It's about 350 miles.
I think I mentioned to you that I tried to do the Trans-America Trail solo, and got from DC to Colorado in three months. (I had hoped to reach Oregon by that time.)
I've occassionally thought that I would like to do a ride across the USA. But I don't know if I could ever come up with the time until I retire. Wouldn't it be easier to do the ride from west to east than from east to west? Did you run into a lot of headwinds? How did you get back to DC from Colorado?
If I attempt Rochester, I wouldn't wear a backpack, and I figured I'd give myself at least 10 days. I'm lazy: I don't get up with the sun and ride as hard as I can. On my trip west, I only made it above 70 miles in a day once, and that was only because the distance between the two towns was more than that. And aside from the Blue Ridge Mountains, my route -- according to others -- was essentially flat. To me, flat is what you get when you look out on a lake and see the horizon. My trip wasn't flat. ;-)
:) Be aware that riding through Pa (at least the way that I have cued out) is far from flat and is extremely hilly at times. And I tend to think that the hilliest parts of the ride were in the second half ... the part we didn't do.
My nephew has said that if he were to do the ride again he would go along route 15, a much more direct route ... probably 50 - 100 miles shorter.
My attempt to NY was my first try at a multi-day, long distance ride. I tend to be a lazy rider, too. I like to take my time, leave late in the morning, quit early in the day, but not necessarily take a lot of stops in between. My nephew, on the other hand, likes to get things started and get things over as soon as possible. Every morning during the ride he was up tapping his fingers waiting for me. On the road he constantly rode ahead and had to wait for me. I think that's why his legs were burning after three days on the road. I think I'll do my next long distance ride by myself. :)
'Course I didn't train either. That could have something to do with things. ;-) Based on what other riders said, I was carrying too much. I had 4 panniers packed to the max, plus a tent and sleeping bag, a handlebar bag, a small bag under the seat for tools and a pump/patch kit in a bag hanging from the frame. Oh, and -- for lack of a better word -- a "purse" that was big enough to hold a large wallet, a map and a few other handies. I'd travel lighter if I was bound for the Not-So-Great, Not-So-White, North. ;-)
Egads! You were definitely carrying a lot. But then you had a really long ways to go in probably unfamilar territory. I don't think I'd be able to ride if I had to carry a tent and a sleeping bag.
