June 30, 1998: Mobility Engineering resurects the HandBike

The following is a paraphrasing of a message I received from Peter Rieke <peter.rieke@mobilityeng.com>

I'm Pete Rieke. My partners and I are trying to resurect the HandBike formerly manufactured by Chris Schwandt of New Dimensions Design.

We - Mobility Engineering - bought out NDD from Chris's widow in January and have just recently completed construction of the first bike. Unfortunately Chris died with much of the art in his head and we have had to reinvent the wheel so-to-speak. However we are now ready to offer the bike commercially. We would much appreciate if you would direct interested persons to us at:

Our web site does not have much on the HandBike as of yet but has much more on our recent attempts to climb Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier using the Snow Pod.

In memory of Chris Schwandt

Chris Shwandt (1946-1996), proprietor of New Dimensions Designs, died of a heart attack on November 13, 1996. According to the brief notice in New Mobility magazine,

"Chris considered the HandBike the perfect expression of his life interests, combining sculpture, mechanical design and a profound sense of shared adventure."

I never met the man face-to-face, but in many long conversations with him over the phone, I found him to be a very warm-hearted, thoughtful man, with a passion for his work/art. He'll be missed by many.
