| Abstract: | An account of the 1902 Turin Prima Espozizione Internationale d'Arte Decorativa Moderna (First International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art), based on the recently discovered papers of Erik Gustaf Folcker, Secretary of Svenska Slojdforeningen (Swedish Society of Industrial Design) and curator at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, who was one of the members of the jury at the exhibition. Folcker's papers includes details of the marks awarded to individual exhibitors and personal comments about the exhibits. The article also includes extracts from contemporary reports on the exhibition that appeared in 'Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration'. 'Die Kunst', 'The Studio' and 'Medelanden fran Svenska Slodforeningen'. Among the exhibitors whose work is discussed in Folcker's papers and the contemporary press are Charles Rennie Mackintosh , Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh , Frances McNair, Walter Crane and Peter Behrens. The consensus of opinion seems to be that the British section dominated, by the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, were the stars of the show and the diplome d'honneur was unanimously awarded to this section. Much favourable comment was also made about the work exhibited by the Glasgow contingent led by the Mackintosh es, although Folcker did have his reservations here. | ||
