Commonly stated goals for the A-NZ economy:

1. Night work in the knowledge economy
2. Using Internet to be in instantaneous connection
with rest of world
3. Increasing tourism
4. Improving the A-NZ “brand” meaning and recognition,
as for “New Zealand lamb” and “New Zealand skiing”
Why such goals? Because it is recognized
that the provision of primary and near primary products no longer cut it
in the “post-industrial” or post-material economy we seem to live in now.
That is, in the “advanced countries, such as Europe and the US,and also
A-NZ to a considerable extent, most of people’s time and effort is not
taken up either with producing or directly consuming either farm or industrial
products, but rather in activities that are not directly material. Why
this change? What is the new direction. It will help to have an idea in
order to evaluate goals for A-NZ. How then can we characterize the new
economy? In the next few pages I look at the main alternatives briefly….…
