Here are a few shots of the amp and sub installation in my 1998 4Runner. I am very pleased with the finished install -- it all buttoned up very nicely.
The finished installation sounds pretty good. It doesn't sound as good as the system in my truck, but given the difference in components it shouldn't as good as the truck's system. The sub and amp sound great, though -- no complaints there! Very smooth and tight bass, with lots of detail and plenty of volume if I want it. That said, I think the sound quality of the amplifier and sub expose some of the weaknesses of the Sony HU and component speakers. It all sounds fine at low volume, but at moderate volume levels the limitations of the Sony 1-bit D/A converter and component speakers and crossovers sound harsher than I would like. It's not horrible, but it's not Dynaudio, either. Sigh...I guess I'll have to come back to the front speakers when I get the chance...
Here is a breakdown of the components:
- Sony CDX-M670 AM/FM/CD (came w/4Runner)
- AudioControl Four.1 EQ
- Soundstream Rubicon 555 5 channel amp (40W X 4 + 150W X 1, but I think those are conservative numbers)
- Sony Xplod 6.5" component speakers/tweeters (came w/4Runner)
- Nakamichi 5.25" coaxial speakers (rear fill, came w/4Runner)
- Illusion Audio ND-10 subwoofer in custom 'glass .8 cu. ft. sealed enclosure
