Sommocolonia
High in the mountains above Barga lies a sleepy little village
called Sommocolonia. During WWII, the mountains to the north of Lucca
were the target of Allied bombing. Though Barga was relatively
unscathed, Sommocolonia lost many of its oldest buildings, which stand
in ruin as a reminder.
This arch, which frames the valley floor far below, was all that remained
of what must have once been a beautiful villa.
This painting inside the church in Sommocolonia caught my eye.
A memorial to Sommocolonians who lost their lives in WWI. I was touched
by the fresh flowers in the vase at the base of the monument.
