Sightseeing in Costa Rica, Cano Negro

We bought a one-day tour package to Cano Negro, a lowland wildlife preserve at the northernmost edge of Costa Rica. The tour van that took us to the Rio Frio for our boat ride was designed to hold 12 souls, including the driver and the guide, but we were the only two aboard that day and we had the guide all to ourselves.

On the drive to the preserve, our guide had the driver stop at a small bridge in a dogleg town. The guide led us out onto the bridge and said "Look at the trees. Look closely." There were dozens of iguanas dozing amidst the branches.

A young iguana

A large male iguana, perhaps five feet long from snout to end of tail, has turned orange, a sign that it's mating season.
