Costa Rica, November 2006 -- The plants and flowers

With temperatures and humidity regularly in the 70s and 80s, and near-daily rainfall, it's no wonder the flora of Costa Rica is so varied and so lush. I was surprised by the lack of fragrant blossoms. I'd expected something similar to the rich array of aromas offered by the flowers of Hawaii, but there were very few scents despite the enormous variety.

Something in the family of ginger, I suspect.

Torch ginger was everywhere. This enormous blossom -- about 10 inches across -- is dense, waxy. The flower ball could weight several pounds.

Oh happy pollinator, oh happy flower!
