The roots of "Dyer-Bennet"

My paternal great grandfather, F.S.H. Dyer (born Dec. 3, 1862). Taken in Cannes in 1900.
Sometime in the late 1880s or early 1890s, my great grandfather appended a hyphenated
"Bennet" to his surname for reasons having to do with some kind of inheritence.

My paternal great-grandmother, Adelaide Ann Dyer. She and my great grandfather had one child, a son, Richard. All Dyer-Bennets in the world (fewer than 15 currently) are related through my grandfather.
