Mexico, 2003

A century plant, about to bloom.

Amidst a rather dry, dusty landscape, this bright patch of flowers attracted dozens and dozens of butterflies.

These round clumps of vegetation on the branches aren't produced by the tree that's housing them. I was told they're created by birds, who persist in decorating shrubbery and man-made wires -- from overhead electrical wires to clothes lines -- with their festive designs. Then somebody else told me they're more like Spanish moss and that they sometimes have spectacular blooms. Which story do you prefer?
