Mexico, 2003

Licuados (smoothies) are a popular refreshment. My favoriate licuado bar offered a splendid array of fresh, ripe fruit for this ambrosial beverage. Licuados "to go" are served in a plastic bag with a straw.

Gorditas -- tortillas so thick they can be slit open and stuffed like pita bread -- are a must-try in San Miguel. The potential fillings range from garbanzo beans and nopales to shredded chicken and potatoes.

Of course, with all the great food, exercise is a must. Our version was walking 4-5 miles a day. These teens got theirs in a more regimented fashion.
