For the Birds

When I lived in Australia, I was barely aware of the astounding variety of birds this country offers. On this visit I learned to appreciate the rich array of feathered friends that presented themselves to me. I was especially taken with the rainbow lorikeets, which visited me every morning on the balcony of the north Sydney apartment where I stayed for nearly three weeks.

Though these are wild birds, they are so accustomed to humans that they will hop onto your camera and peck at the lens if you let them.

They love to lick sugar off the palm of my hand

They are entirely fearless, and totally charming
