Australia 2015
The beaches of northern Queensland are gorgeous. Vast stretches of
pristine golden sand, the ocean is clear, blue, calm, pleasantly warm.
But people don't go swimming here.
That's because there are crocodiles. Big ones called "salties" that can
get up to 20 feet long. They generally hang out in the brackish water
at the mouths of rivers feeding into the ocean,
but they also swim in the ocean, cruising the shoreline in search of
tasty treats entering the water from beaches. And if the salties don't
get you, the stinging jellyfish can make your life hell instead, so most
people avoid the beaches.
The exception is a netted beach. Or rather, a swimming area in the water
enclosed by a mesh net that keeps the salties and stingers out.
