Australia 2015

We rent a car and take a leisurely 500-mile, two-day drive to get from Sydney to the Byron Bay area. At the end of our first day's driving we stop in a beachside town called Port Macquarie, where the beach's promenade is dotted by oversized fiberglass koalas, each decorated with a different theme by a local artist. We are particularly delighted by this koala cyclist.

We also visit a koala hospital and sanctuary on the edge of town, where we get to see this frisky little guy take a big leap.

If the koala I'm cuddling looks a little odd it's because it's taxidermied. It had been too injured to be released and it lived its life out at the sanctuary. When it died, it was stuffed to use as an educational tool, but the hide was not tanned properly and it turned an odd orange hue.
