We're the first to arrive at the castle, and we have it to ourselves. At left, Cynthia climbs the stairs in the castle's center courtyard, headed toward the main-floor living quarters.

The solitude doesn't last long. Shortly after we arrive, three tour buses full of Russian tourists pull up. Our tour of the castle is hurried, as we try to keep ahead of the throngs pressing up behind us.

The lighting inside the castle is poor, and "no flash" was the rule. This throne-like chair is the centerpiece of the formal living room.


The flaming giraffe was Dali's addition to this 10-foot-tall tapestry that adorns the wall of a large sitting room.
