These terra cotta tubes, each about 4 feet tall and 8 inches in diameter,
were part of the water purification system for the city. Each tube
was packed with carbon, sand, and minerals through which piped water
flowed before being directed to cisterns in individual dwellings
farther down the slope.
The Greek area of Empuries, older by many centuries than the Roman
ruins on the flatter plain above, nests against the gentle curve of a
Mediterranean bay.
