Portland's Pittock Mansion, September 2008

The mansion was once the private residence of newspaper magnate Henry Pittock and his wife, Georgiana. It sits high on the slope of the hillside west of downtown Portland, with a stunning view of the city and the mountains beyond to the east. Though the top floor of the house is closed to the public, the other three floors of this massive Victorian structure are open for viewing. For more information and some professional photos that will give you a better overview of the home, check out this link to the Pittock Mansion.

The kitchen's 100-year-old linoleum had disintigrated under layers of newer flooring material, but enough remained of the original jigsaw pattern that artisans were able to recreate the intricate design and restore the floor to its original layout of tiny interlocking pieces.

A very early model typewriter; note the unusual layout of the keyboard letters

Of course, there's food, too
