Utah, Spring 2010: Capitol Reef
Capitol Reef is our last planned stop on our vacation. We visited the place briefly in the spring of 2002 and vowed to come back; this is our happy return. We've booked two nights at a Torrey Hotel but quickly realize we want to extend our stay an extra day.
David rides his bike the 30 miles from Boulder to Torrey over the
9200-foot summit of Boulder Mountain in about two hours. I serve as
his sag wagon and Official Photographer.
In this photo you can see parts of Grand Staircase in the near distance. Beyond that, Capitol Reef, and farthest away, the snow-capped Henry Mountains. |
Our first hike in Capitol Reef takes us along a dry sandy river bed with massive cliffs soaring above us on either side. Look closely to see David waving from atop a ridge. |
The rock formations and colorations are endlessly fascinating to us.
Here, the red and chocolate-hued vertical stripes vividly demonstrate the
uplift of sedimentary rock that created the amazing geological features
of this region.
In contrast to the sharp, jutting shapes of some rock formations, others
show lush, rounded curves that beguile the eye.
