Bob Pickens, co-owner of Seabreeze Market, waves from the deck of his commercial fish boat as it enters the Berkeley Marina. Although only part of the Ge-Ge's catch ends up for sale at Seabreeze, it indicates an appreciation for quality seafood that only comes from this kind of vertical integration of production and retail. Waterfront restaurants were more commonly associated with fishing fleets in the early part of the last Century (e.g. Spenger's) but this tradition has all but disappeared. Compare Seabreeze to the typical State Parks food concession, and we begin to understand how much damage the Eastshore State Park could do to one of the most valued features of the Berkeley waterfront. previous photo - - - - - - - - - - - - next photo |
