Jean Ritchie was born in Viper, Kentucky, where her
family farmed the steep mountain land and spent the evenings
singing ballads for entertainment. When she moved to New York as a
young woman, she became swept up in the folk revival scene there,
and quickly rose to prominence as the unofficial ambassador of
Kentucky traditional folk music, taking it around the world with
her. Jean is also a prolific songwriter whose music has been
recorded by countless country and folk performers, including Lester
Flatt, Dolly Parton, Michelle Shocked, and The Johnson Mountain
Boys.
