The Women of Southern Songbirds - The Powers Family
The Women of Southern Songbirds
The Powers Family:
The Powers Family String Band of St. Paul,
Virginia was the first family string band to make a commercial
recording. In 1924, Fiddlin' Cowan Powers and his children, Ada,
Orpha, Carrie and Charles, went to New York to record six sides for
the Victor Talking Machine Company. The records, which were some of
the first country recordings, introduced the general public to the
world of mountain music. The Powers girls played mandolin, guitar,
and ukelele in the band.
