Here is a quick page with links to pieces I've written that are on the web.
- Review of the PBS show Springboard in Street Cred in the July 2001 issue of Wired
- Review of Kick Ass: Selected Columns of Carl Hiaasen
in April 25, 2001 Bay Guardian
- Review of Blogger in Street Cred in the January 2001 issue of Wired (exactly six years years after I last was published there).
- Profile of Dan Perkins
(Tom Tomorrow) in the October 25th, 2000 Bay Guardian. Plus a long interview with lots of graphics.
- A Frank interview, 1500 words of excerpts from an interview Annalee Newitz and I conducted with Tom Frank in the December 6th Bay Guardian. A very Frank interview, complete 9000 word transcript of the interview.
- Banned by the NAB and photos as part of the Bay Guardian's NAB coverage (9-27-00)
- A summary of the fourth episode of Big Brother for Salon (7-19-00)
- Speed of Sound, an article on digital distribution of audio books by Audible and Loudbooks from the July/August 2000 issue of Book Magazine.
I also did research and wrote a sidebar (which isn't online) for What About E-Reading? by Rob Brookman.
- INTERVIEW: Wagner, Public Broadcasting, and Jon Else, director of "Sing Faster: The Stagehand's
Ring Cycle" for IndieWire (6-9-99) [Sing Faster was broadcast on September 27th, 1999 on the PBS series, Independent Lens. ]
- Review of The Black Press for TV Ultra (2-8-99) It is now available on DVD for the educational market.
- Alternative International News Sources: Focus on Mexico with Ben Clarke (Unfortunately the urls aren't live) MediaFile Janury/February 1999
- Alternative PSAs on Direct Effect from The Guardian back in 1991.
- Aaron Barnhart (Late Show News) profile from New City back in 1994
- Cindy Lee Berryhill from the Winter 95 issue of Tapers Quarterly. The Garage Orchestra link goes to my review of the album from Wired.
- You're welcome to Bitch - MediaFile 1997
- My So-Called Modem - 1995 story for the SF Bay Guardian on fan culture online. I need to update the links in this story.
- Tom Tomorrow aka Dan Perkins profile, MediaFile 1992
- Strip Teased: Paley, Perkins leave Examiner for weeklies , Mediafile June/ July 1994
- Story on media getting online for MediaFile in 1993. My first piece on new media.
- Media and Rape with Tiffany Devitt. 1991 op-ed on coverage of the William Kennedy Smith rape case. I'll have a several more article on coverage of sexaul assault up soon.
- Activists Put the Public in Public TV Extra! December 1992, FAIR's magazine.
- I wrote a Netsurf item on This Modern World (when someone else was maintaining it) in Wired 3.01 (it is the sixth item down)
- Basement Books Netsurf item in Wired 2.10 (the third item down). Basement Full of Books (like all of things I wrote about for Netsurf) has moved. It was started by Vonda McIntyre (who won the 1997 Nebula award).
- Netsurf items on Noam Chomsky and Aaron Barnhart's Late Show News in Wired 2.12 (the third from last item and the last one).
- No room at the bin - an interview with me in Salon on my experiences selling software at Virgin Megastore. I actually wanted Scott to use my name, but it was a good thing he didn't. A Virgin employee in LA was fired for talking to Multimedia Retailer News. I also talked to the reporter (she quoted me even though I told her to interview my boss) and when I was brought in to be reprimanded, I thought they had discovered this piece. Luckily, my boss supported me since I didn't agree to be quoted on the record.
I contribute regularly to TVBarn. I have a weblog,
Tiger Beat (older entries), which I don't
update as often as I should. I also contributed briefly to Rewired: Blog of a Strained Net. I wrote most of sfblog, the Bay Guardian's weblog when I was working there.
I also have three photo/moblogs, one personal (though it had a lot of political stuff early on)
Tigerbeat, another political, and
a third on film. More photos on flickr.
Here is a list (the links don't currently work) of some of the items I've written for Justin Hall's zine, bud.com.
Other Articles
I wrote and edited weekly TV Picks for the Bay Guardian from August 2000 through May 2001. Here are some which remain online:
