Liberation from Unconscious Assumptions

by Andra Akers

The phrase, 'sustainable consciousness' implies a radical reorganization of the political sphere. Inherent in the words, 'sustainable consciousness' is a shift in the balance of North-South, "East-West" perspectives, which will produce turbulence and distortion in the world's ideological systems.

Do we have the human tools necessary to hold a space open so this transition can occur? Or are we, especially in the USA, creating a new priesthood based in the unconscious assumptions of the dominant culture? Having just returned from North Africa, and having worked for five years on environmental issues in Eastern Europe, I sometimes despair at our inability to understand the vast issues at play in other cultures, and to deal with the paradox of defining a consciousness that denies other's realities.

How do we acquire, to use Nathan Gardel's phrase, an authentic, global, "magnanimous soul"?
