UPAYA:
A not-for-profit Buddhist organization
dedicated to education
and practices that foster effective action
and
right livelihood.
Mission Statement
Upaya is the Sanskrit word for "skillful means" or "the craft of
compassion." The concept of compassion as an actual practice is based in
the realization that all things are interconnected. Understanding this,
we cannot turn away from the suffering of others. The wellbeing of
others is intimately related to our own lives. This perspective confirms
the importane of each individual living respectfully and responsibly.
Upaya is engaged in education, practice, and service which
- provides a setting for retreats and educational work,
- works with individuals suffering from life-threatening illnesses, and
provides training for the spiritual care of dying people
- offers counseling, funding consultation and, in some cases, financial
support to individuals and groups engaged in the work of cultural
revitalization, social justice and environmental advocacy, and
- participates in national and international meetings on the
development of Buddhism in the West, and environmental and intercultural
issues.
We work at both regional and international levels, addressing issues
which are pressing for individuals, tribes, communities, and
environments.
